About Howcast

Founded by veterans of Google and YouTube, Howcast Media brings together the personality of user-generated content with the quality of a professional video studio to help consumers learn how-to do everything from the practical (“How to Paint a Wall”), to the unusual (“How to Get Paid for Donating Plasma”), to the entertaining (“How Not to Get Mugged”) at www.howcast.com. With high-quality video content and vibrant user communities organized around specific topic categories, Howcast provides a wealth of opportunities for distribution and advertising partners. Check out recent reviews by The Wall Street Journal and The Chicago Tribune, among others.

Howcast is set apart by our pursuit of the very best video content. We produce our own video content in our New York City studio with cutting-edge directors as well as through the Howcast Emerging Filmmakers Program, which provides emerging filmmakers with the opportunity to gain experience, exposure and a paycheck. We also welcome stellar instructional content from trusted sources like Playboy, Popular Science, and Home Depot, as well as from some of the best individual video contributors on the web.

The Howcast Team

With offices in New York City and San Francisco, we are building a team of media and technology professionals to maintain and expand our digital presence. We’re proud to offer an environment which prizes creativity and collaboration, recognizes personal achievements, and believes in the potential of our team members.

Role

Howcast is on the hunt for talented writers! The hottest how-to website is looking to fill one full-time position in our New York office as well as build a stable of talented contract writers who can work remotely. All of our written guides turn into fun, informative Howcast videos, so it's essential that candidates possess the ability to conceptualize their words spoken aloud and acted out, not just on the page.

  • The full-time position will be responsible for writing how-to guides on a wide variety of subjects, from practical (How to Install a Window Air Conditioner) to racy (How to Know if She'll Be Good in Bed), zany (How to Hold It in When You Have to Pee and There's No Bathroom) to newsy (How to Get the Swine Flu Vaccine). In addition, the full-time writer will also pen guides for specific clients who may hire Howcast to produce video content on various topics.
  • Contract writers will be assigned client work on a project basis and will be responsible for seeing the project to its completion, from kickoff call and script draft through revisions, notes, and a final version ready for voiceover.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong reporting and writing skills
  • Ability to write in a clear, concise manner and adhere to a specific format and style
  • Ability to absorb a lot of information from several sources and quickly synthesize it into an organized, easy-to-follow set of instructions
  • Experience writing for film, television, or video
  • Experience writing for clients with specific needs and requirements
  • Sense of humor (seriously, you gotta be funny)
  • Ability to creatively brainstorm ideas, topics, and conceptual approaches
  • Flexible nature and ego that can withstand (always judicious, of course) editing and tight deadlines
  • Patience and enthusiasm to thrive in a start-up environment

Preferred

  • Background in service or instructional content
  • Experience writing for narration/voiceover
