Mobile Application Developer
San Francisco, CA
We are looking for a motivated, talented mobile application developer to join our engineering team.
The Role:
We’re looking for a talented, motivated mobile application developer to lead our robust mobile efforts to the next level. A little bit about those efforts to date: Howcast is the #1 mobile how-to application on the web, with over 3 million installs across our iPad, iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry applications. Featured in an Apple television commercial shortly after its launch, our iPhone app is one of the most successful apps in iTunes. We've also launched a wildly successful iPad application, which rose to the #2 free app position in iTunes in its first week and has been selected several times as an "App of the Week," plus an Android app that’s been featured in the Android Market.
We have ambitious plans to grow our mobile leadership position even further, both by developing new custom apps and building new features for our existing apps. Our goal is to turn our mobile apps into a learning platform by marrying great features with our engaging, informative videos. We also have plans to build apps that plug into our proprietary content-creation platform.
The takeaway: There's a ton of opportunity, and we're investing heavily in mobile. You will be responsible for leading all these initiatives, from app ideation to execution. If you enjoy working at a fast-paced, exciting startup company with the potential of developing innovative apps used by millions of people, this could be the job for you.
Your Responsibilities:
Working with our talented engineering team, your responsibilities will include:
- the design and launch of a new series of apps that will significantly grow both our users and install base;
- conceiving, building, extending, enhancing, and maintaining features for our existing iPhone, iPad, and Android applications;
- experimenting with new ideas for mobile growth, including building apps around consumer video creation;
- collaborating with designers and product management to create great user experiences;
- building and leading a team: we are looking to grow, so you will be responsible for hiring and managing a junior developer down the road.
- Advanced proficiency in iOS mobile application development
- At least one iOS application you’ve built that's been a hit in the App Store! Bonus points for being a hit on iPad and iPhone
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with memory management
- A creative thinker with a keen eye and passion for user experience
- An innate ability to chase down and tackle tricky bugs and issues which are endemic to mobile app development
- Experience building apps on Android. Super bonus points if any were hits!
- Experience with mobile video formats, codecs, and video player modification
- Experience building data-driven, web applications with a dynamic, interpreted language (ideally Ruby)
- Experience working with RESTful web services’ APIs
What We're Looking For:
Bonus Points for Any of the Following:
The Team:
Howcast’s engineering team practices a casual, agile development methodology. We have daily stand-ups and usually release on a weekly basis. We keep our work schedules sustainable, and do our best to plan releases so that we’re always fresh as daisies, ready and able to make smart decisions. We also take having fun in the office very seriously. Ping-pong, the imbibing of brewed malt beverages, building our own cornhole boards -- we promise, you’ll like us.
About Howcast:
Howcast empowers people with engaging, useful how-to information wherever, whenever they need to know how. Led by a senior management team including Google and YouTube veterans with deep roots in traditional and new media as well as technology, Howcast has offices in San Francisco and New York. Known for high-quality content, Howcast streams tens of millions of videos every month across its multi-platform distribution network. With over three million downloads across iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry phones, Howcast is the #1 mobile app for instructional content -- wherever you are.
