How do I join the Emerging Filmmakers Program?
Once you click "Apply Now," you'll be taken to the application. You'll be asked to provide some basic information, and then you'll choose a topic for your first video. You'll download our production resources (script, voice-over, graphics, guidelines, etc.) and then, shoot, edit, and upload for our producers to review. If your video is accepted, you’ll be a member of the program.
If I'm accepted into the program, what will I be paid and how?
You'll earn a $50 stipend for every approved video (via PayPal or check). If your video becomes a hit on the web (if it gets 40,000 or more playbacks on Howcast.com), we'll also split any ad revenue generated with you.
Where do I select my topic?
After you click "Apply Now," you'll select your topic on page 2 of the application.
What if I can't find a topic that suits me?
Check back often because we upload new topics regularly. If you have a suggestion for a topic, you may email us at emergingfilmmakers@howcast.com; but please keep in mind that Howcast topics are carefully selected by our Programming team and many suggestions have already been considered or turned into a video.
How long do I have to make my video, and what if I miss my deadline?
The due date is two weeks from the time you select your topic. Howcast scripts are short, so it's actually easier than you think to make the deadline, but you can also request an extension through the site any time. Once you miss your deadline, the topic will be unlocked so other members can select it. If that happens, you can always come back and select a new topic any time.
Are there guidelines for making a Howcast video?
Yes, we have Production Guidelines which you'll download on page 4 of the application. They're easy-to-follow and they cover everything you need to know, including content and shooting tips, and editing and uploading specs. If you ever have any questions or need any help as you're making your Howcast video, please e-mail us at emergingfilmmakers@howcast.com. We're happy to help!
What kind of equipment do I need to make a Howcast video?
You'll need a 3-chip Mini DV or an HD camera and video-editing software that can process .MOV files. (For example: Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro Express, Avid, Premiere, or Vegas. Pinnacle and iMovie will not process the Howcast graphics.) If you're unsure about your camera or your software, e-mail us at emergingfilmmakers@howcast.com before you get started.
Do I have to use Howcast scripts? May I edit the Howcast scripts?
Every video produced in the program must be made from a Howcast script and follow the production guidelines. The scripts cannot be changed, but the voice-over may be edited slightly for pacing.
Can I use my own previously made videos to apply to the program?
Every video produced in the program must use Howcast scripts and graphics and follow our production guidelines. You’re welcome to upload other how-to videos to Howcast, outside the program, as a contributor. Visit howcast.com/upload/new.
Can I use my own graphics and music?
Every video produced in the program must be made using Howcast graphics and music. Please be sure to download all the elements you need, and review the guidelines before you get started.
How many Howcast videos can I make at a time?
Applicants make one video to start, but accepted filmmakers often make multiple videos at one time. Once you’re accepted, we can arrange a production schedule that works for you.
What happens after I upload and submit my video?
Howcast producers carefully review every submitted video and provide thorough feedback within 7-10 days. Most videos then go through one or two revision rounds before they go live.
